UMA stands for "Union of the Modern and the Ancient" and means "Middle Way" in Tibetan.

UMA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to:

• translation into English (and possibly other languages) of texts from Tibetan Buddhist traditions
• seminars, classes, and retreats on focal topics of Tibetan Buddhism and instruction in the literary and colloquial aspects of the Tibetan language
• maintainance and development of archives as a research and instructional resource accessible across the Worldwide Web
